What is the Emoyoh patchwork technique?

Emoyoh is a technique developed by Yuriko Moriyama. Emoyoh translates as a “pictorial patchwork.” The Emoyoh technique features determining how small pieces of fabric may be sewn together to create a picture or image.

Yuriko wanted to find a way to easily create beautiful patchworks without taking time out of her busy life. Through trial and error, she developed a simple and flexible patchwork technique, in which a practitioner could sew patterns using a variety of colored fabrics in the same way a painter used a palate of paint.

Because her method is simple, even a beginner can easily create a patchwork with complex patterns and beautiful curves. These patchworks are sturdy enough to be used in everyday life. No special equipment is required for this technique.

Yuriko’s Nijiiro Dye

Nijiiro is Japanese for “rainbow color.”  Nijiiro Dye is a special formulation invented by Yuriko. It provides a watercolor like effect and allows the user to create fine gradients of color.

This liquid dye does not require hot water or a dye fixative because it is soluble in cold water. In addition, the dye is concentrated; therefore, only a small amount is required to dye your fabric with different shades. After dyeing, just hang the fabric up to dry without rinsing. After ironing, the color does not fade even when washed in water. The dye comes in four basic colors – black, yellow, blue and red. Mixing these allows you to create all the colors of the rainbow.
